Filling the Void

Chapter 1

Towards a holistic inquiry into social media

The state of affairs and the necessity of a broad critique

Social media have been normalised into the lives of millions, even billions, of people. But there's no reason we need to accept them as normal or inevitable. There is nothing inevitable about checking social media while driving, or showing the world pictures of your breakfast.

Instead, the place of social media in our society and in our individual psychological realities needs to be highlighted and critiqued. This chapter acts as an introduction to the book and sets the scene for the arguments and critique that follow in later chapters.
